Garden report: the mums, impatiens, dahlias, zinnias, snapdragons, New England asters and black-eyed Susans are still in bloom. I have started to take out the dead stalks in the vegetable garden. However, the beans are still producing and there are a few tomatoes to be picked.

Christine Newman of Northampton sent an email about the Polish Flag raising ceremony that will be held Sat. Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Hall in Northampton, sponsored by the Polish Heritage Committee in celebration of Polish Heritage Month. After the flag raising, there will be a memorial ceremony at Pulaski Park. The events are free and open to the public.

Walking Tours, sponsored by the Amherst Historical Society, begin Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. with “Dickinson’s Ceaseless Sympathy” at the West Cemetery. The 75-minute tour is led by Sarah Zurieck-Brown, a society board member. The walking tours continue Oct. 18, 25 and Nov. 1. There is a fee. Preregistration is required. The Conway Festival will be held Sunday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Town Field with music, food, craft vendors, raffle, parade, children’s activities and library book sale. The event is free and open to the public.

Martha McCormick of Northampton sent an email about the Friends of the Forbes Library Artisan Fair that will be held Sunday, Oct 4, rain or shine, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with over 50 vendors. The fair, which is a fundraiser for the library, includes music , food, a raffle of artisan’s works, and baskets. She is a board member of the Friends.

Laura Haas of Amherst sent me an email about a lecture “Predicting Elections: Why Can’t We Get it Right?” to be held Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at UMass downtown . Laura and Francine Bergman will present the talk, which is free and open to the public.

Barbara Schuman of Amherst sent me a postcard from Cortona, Italy, where she went to see an exhibit by her photographer son, Aaron. His exhibit was part of “Cortona on the Move,” an international photography festival. While there, she visited the Antiquarian Show and the Etruscan Museum.
