Friday, Sept. 11. I remember that Tuesday, Sept. 11. I saw on television the plane crash into the New York City tower. I remember. Thank you to all the responders that day. Yet saying thank you doesn’t seem enough for all that heart and effort that went into caring for others.

Garden report: the dahlias finally bloomed. The autumn sedum is turning pink. The tomatoes and green beans continue to produce. I harvested celery. The celery ribs are thin but the intense green color and aroma are wonderful

The Amherst Community Theater is holding auditions for “Frozen,” which will be performed in January at Bowker Auditorium on the UMass campus, according to an email from Phoebe Hazard of Amherst. Auditions will be held Sept. 17, 19 and 20 at the Amherst Regional Middle School. Children age 7 and entering second grade and anyone older can audition. Visit amherstarts.org/audition to schedule an appointment. The shows are always fabulous. Order tickets as soon as they are available so you won’t be disappointed.

The annual Amherst Block Party will be held Thursday, Sept. 17 from 5-9 p.m. on the closed off North Pleasant Street from Amity Street to Kendrick Park. Entertainment includes music, jugglers and stilt walkers. Restaurants will offer food. Dozens of community organizations and businesses have tables with information and opportunities to volunteer. It’s free except for the food you buy.

Barbara Schuman of Amherst sent me a postcard from Bath, England, where she visited family. She wrote that the heat is intense with no rain for a month.
