Garden report: I pick tomatoes every day. I picked another bunch of herbs to dry — basil, lemon thyme, oregano. The new batch of radishes should be ready in a few days.

The schools are holding First Night Aug. 24 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Kendrick Park with lots of activities. The event will be held in the Amherst Regional Middle School cafeteria in case of rain.

Jeanne Horrigan of Amherst sent me an email noting the next Senior Sip is Aug. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ginger Gardens. Snacks will be provided. You pay for your own beverages.

Maureen Bowler sent me an email to note the annual Amherst Rotary Club Community Fair will be held from Thursday, Aug. 27 through Sunday, Aug. 30 on the Town Common. She wrote that the grand opening will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. It’s a fun way to begin the academic season and eat cotton candy and fried dough.

The Amherst Survival Center is hosting a concert, Tunes at Noon — French Press, Friday, Aug. 28. The program features music from Quebec, Brittany and France. The concert is free and open to the public.

Anna and Lad Nagurney of Amherst sent a postcard from Ljubljana, Slovenia where they were between three conferences. “Anna gave a keynote in Naples and will be speaking in Linz and Vienna. Ljubljana is the perfect Green City,” they wrote.
Dennis Bromery and Linda Marston of Amherst sent a postcard from La Grande Boucherie, a restaurant in New York City. They had French red Bordeaux wine. He had prime rib, she had duck. “Bon appetit,” they wrote. The restaurant is at West 53rd Street.

With two weeks to Labor Day, it is time to set out the Halloween candy in local stores. That is so discouraging since we are having what I call real summer weather. Last weekend was perfect.
Aug. 17 marks the date I moved to Amherst. Happy Anniversary to my house.
