AMHERST — A 19-year-old Amherst man who set off fireworks in front of the Central fire station early on Independence Day morning is being summoned to court on several charges, including illegal possession of fireworks and narcotics, police said.

Officers responded to the 68 North Pleasant St. location Friday at 4:10 a.m. after a security camera at the fire station showed two teens, a male and female, lighting the fireworks in the middle of the road and then running toward an alleyway.

The road was temporarily blocked as the active firework was extinguished.

Both suspects were located leaving the location in a vehicle, with additional fireworks inside the vehicle in plain view of the officers, according to police. During a search of the vehicle, additional fireworks and assorted drugs, some packaged for sale, were also found, police said.
