I object to the misleading headline on the continuation of the front-page Saturday story on Hadley’s Town Meeting, “Residents Shun Climate Declaration.” “Shun” is a verb that implies widespread agreement to isolate a person, community, or set of ideas. “Defeat” would have been an accurate verb, but with a defeat by only 11 votes, “Shun” grossly misrepresents the sentiment of the town.

Supporters and opponents both agreed that climate change is a real issue and we need more discussion of it in town. What this narrow vote means is that the two sides could benefit by talking and that a climate resolution that most of the town can agree on is very much a possibility down the road.
