Garden report: I will plant the scallion and marigold seedlings to fill in the spaces in the vegetable and flower beds. I found a small clump of poison ivy under the arbor vitae. I may throw a carpet piece on top to kill it.

The Amherst Area League of Women Voters, of which I am a member, will hold its annual book sale Friday., Saturday And Sunday, July 24-26 at the Village Shops next to the Hampton Inn in Hadley. Hours are Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale continues Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 1-2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The fiction and mystery categories are in alphabetical order! As usual there is an eclectic collection of books. Jigsaw puzzles are being sold this year. The money raised is used to register voters, hold candidate forums and voters’ guides.

Jeanne Horrigan, chair of the Amherst Council on Aging sent me an email about the next Senior Sip which will be held Thursday, July 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. at, take your pick — the Lord Jeff or the Inn at Boltwood. It’s free. Snacks are provided but you pay for your own beverage.

A reception to meet and greet Dan Garcia, the new head of the Senior Center, will be held Friday, July 31 from 2-4 p.m. in the Senior Center Lounge. It’s free. There will probably be cake.

Barbara and Jim Pistrang and Betsy and David Mullins of Amherst sent me an email photo of their families on Patmos Island, Greece. There were 19: parents, children and spouses and grandchildren. Four ARHS alums were part of the group. Betsy wrote that they went to the beach, hiked and had wonderful Greek food.

Dennis Bromery of Amherst sent me this email. “What’s in a name. This afternoon, (Sunday), I was doing my neighborhood bicycle ride. As I turned the corner onto Red Fox Lane, I was greeted by a small red fox sitting in the middle of the road. It ran off before I could get a picture. I guess that is how the street got its name.”
Orchard Valley should have a Chipmunk Lane and Bunny Drive given the number of those animals we have in the neighborhood.
