Garden report: the lavender and straw flowers have bloomed. I have small green tomatoes. The sun gold tomatoes should be ready to harvest this week. I ate some radishes and will probably make pickled beets this week.

Reminder: many town offices will be closed Friday, July 3 since the Fourth of July holiday is on a Saturday. However, banks will be closed July 4 for the holiday.

The Amherst Historical Society is sponsoring a reading of the Declaration of Independence Saturday, July 4 at noon on the Town Hall steps. The Amherst Area Gospel Choir will perform. Thanks to the society for passing out red, white and blue popsicles at the Amherst Community Band concert last week.

The Business Improvement District is holding concerts every Friday in July at 5:30 p.m. on the Town Common. Bring blankets or chairs. The concerts are free and open to the public.

The Eric Carle Museum on West Bay Road is holding a Sunset Concert series from 4-8 p.m. beginning Thursday, July 9 and running through August. The program is in collaboration with the Northampton Jazz Festival. Bring blankets or chairs. The concerts are free with museum admission. Besides the music, there are activities for families.

Concerts, workshops and talks are on the agenda for the annual Yidstock Festival that will be held at the Yiddish  Book Center on the Hampshire College campus July 9-12. The program requires admission. For full schedule visit the website: www.yiddishbookcenter.org

I think within a few weeks the potholes on the service road in front of the University Drive Post Office will reach the center of the Earth.
