Garden report: some critter bit the top off a cucumber plant. I put milk crates over the other three plants. The birds have been pecking in my garden. I think that’s why the radish seeds have not sprouted. I have to stake the tomatoes. The iris are still in bloom. The peonies have bloomed.

Rebecca Curzon of Amherst sent me an email that High Definition, a women’s a cappella choir, will perform Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at the North Hadley Congregational Church, 243 River Drive, Hadley.

The Friends of the Jones Library will hold their annual meeting Sunday, June 7 at 3 p.m. in Town Hall, according to an email from Kathy Lanza. After a brief business meeting, sports writer and author Howard Bryant and former sport writer investigative reporter David Porter will have a conversation about “Kings and Pawns.” The meeting is free and open to the public.

Bonnie Isman of Amherst sent me an email about the next Judy Brooks Conversation Series, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, of which I am a member. Laurie Millman, director of the Center for New Americans, will talk about the center’s work with immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The Zoom talk will be held Tuesday, June 9 at 7 p.m. Visit lwvamherst.org to register.

The Amherst Historical Society is holding two walking tours. Bryan Harvey will lead a tour of Factory Hollow Sunday, June 7 at 10 a.m. The walk is two miles and features the industries that were located along the river.

Sarah Zureick-Brown will lead a tour of the Women of West Cemetery, Saturday, June 13 at 11 a.m. The fee is $10 for members and $15 for non members. Pre-registration is required. Visit anmhersthistory.org to register. Both tours suggest wearing comfortable shoes and to bring water.

A truck couldn’t make it under the train bridge on South East Street Monday morning. It was interesting to see especially with all the vehicles and police presence involved.
