Garden report: my first tulip bloomed. It’s red.

Reminder: Monday, April 20 is a holiday, Patriot’s Day.Town offices, banks, schools, libraries will be closed. 

It was the 17th of April that the shot was fired that was heard around the world. Let the revolution begin. It started here in Massachusetts in 1776. Happy anniversary.

The Amherst Farmer’s Market open Saturday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Town Common. Full disclosure I help my friends at the Sunset Farm booth.

April 18 is also Empty Bowls, the fundraiser for the Amherst Survival Center  from noon until 4 p.m. You can buy a hand-crafted bowl and have soup served in it or for a lesser fee you can get soup in a regular bowl. Area restaurants donate the various soups. Besides soup, the meal includes, bread, salad and dessert. The event includes live music.

Rebecca Fricke of Amherst sent me an email about The Fiberistas, an exhibit at the Forbes Library in Northampton. The opening reception is April 18 from 1 to 4 p.m,. The exhibit, which includes works by Rebecca, continues until April 29. It’s free.

The Northampton Education Foundation Plant Sale will be held May 9. Donations for the sale can be dropped off beginning April 22 at the Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School.

The next South Amherst Congregational Church take -out supper will be held Saturday, April 25 with pick up between 5-6 p.m. The menu includes pulled pork, mac and cheese, bakes beans,  cole slaw and carrot cake. Call  253-2977 for reservations.

The last History Bite talk was on Leverett painter Erastus Field. If you have a Field painting in your home, let the Amherst History Center know. He was born in 1805. You can see his home in  Leverett. He studied with Samuel Morse, when he was an artist.
