Reminder: this weekend is the semi-annual changing of the clocks. Digital devices do it automatically. However, some clocks need hand changing, like my alarm clock.

The Amherst Historical Society resumes its History Bites series, Friday, March 13 at noon at the Bangs Center. First up is “Shay’s Rebellion Revisited,” with Tom Goldscheider, who is on the Board of Directors of the Ruggles Center in Florence. The talk is free and open to the public. You can bring a lunch.

Janine Roberts of Leverett sent me an email about a concert that will be held Friday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Parlor Room in Northampton. The concert features her daughter, Natalya Zoe Weinstein, and son-in-law John, Cloyd Miller, known professionally as Zoe and Cloyd. The duo have performed regularly here in July. However, this concert will be their only Western Massachusetts appearance, she wrote. Their repertoire includes bluegrass, Americana and klezgrass. For tickets visit The Parlor Room site.

Sure sign spring is on its way. Mount Holyoke and Smith College open their spring Bulb Shows Friday, March 7. Both shows are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily with special hours on some days. The shows continue until March 22. They are free and open to the public. Walking into a greenhouse, seeing all the colors, smelling the aroma of damp earth, will be heaven after the winter we have had.

On devices, there are videos of weight loss “hacks.” I first recall green tea extract, then pink sea salt and now it is gelatin. Has anyone ever tried any of these? If so do they work? I don’t listen to them, so if it explained the science, I missed it.

Things you learn reading the paper. I never knew Connecticut redeemed bottles and cans for 10 cents.  We get a nickel. It seems out-of-staters take their containers to Connecticut for the extra nickel. However, the extra change you get is probably used by the gas it takes to get to the state. As I say, do the math.
