Jan Blaise of Hatfield sent me a copy of an article written by the Kovels about the custom of sending Valentine’s cards. The best card they wrote is the one, “that expresses the valentine theme of love.”

Next week’s calendar is full — get ready.

Monday, Feb. 16 is President’s Day, a legal holiday. Banks, schools, town offices and libraries will be closed.

Tuesday: Chinese Lunar New Year begins. It is the year of the fire horse. The horse is associated with being energetic, confident, and intelligent, while the fire element enhances these traits with courage and determination, according to an internet site.

Tuesday: Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday. Major celebration in New Orleans. 

Tuesday: Ramadan begins with a month of fasting from dawn to sunset until March 19. Ramadan greetings to all our Muslim friends and neighbors.

Wednesday: Ash Wednesday. Christians fast Wednesday.

Linda Marston and Dennis Bromery of Amherst sent a postcard of Norman Rockwell’s painting, “Golden Rule,” that  shows the diversity of people in the world. It is a classic. They went to the museum and spent the night at the Red Lion Inn. It’s their favorite picture, they wrote.

The South Amherst Congregational Church continues its take-out meal series, Saturday, Feb. 21 from 5-6 p.m. The menu includes lasagna, salad, bread and cannoli cake. A vegetarian option is available. Call 253-2977 for reservations,

The Amherst Winter Festival begins this weekend and ends Saturday, Feb. 21 with the Fire and Ice Luminaria from 3-6 p.m. on the Town Common. In between there are lectures, nature walks, sporting events and  children activities at the Jones Library and Mill District. Check the town web site for details.
