Hopefully by now nobody actually believes the U.S. invasion of Venezuela is about drug interdiction or human rights. Instead, this illegal action was conducted with arguably less justification than Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In the coming weeks we will hear lots of discussion about rebuilding Venezuela accompanied by footage of rejoicing Venezuelans aired by news media owned by the very corporations that bankrolled our current administration’s sweep to the White House.
Even if we take this post-invasion coverage at face value, it doesn’t change the illegality and immorality of regime change of a sovereign country by force. Finally, we should remember that designs against the sovereign government of Venezuela by the U.S. has been largely bi-partisan. If we want and end to these destructive policies that bankrupt our country we need to eschew warmongers of any political affiliation.
