AMHERST — With a search to soon get underway for a new permanent executive director of the Amherst Survival Center, Carleen Basler, senior director of programs, will be the interim leader.
Basler’s role as temporary executive director, starting Oct. 6, was announced by the board of directors Monday. After almost seven years at the center, Executive Director Lev BenEzra will become executive director at Community Action Pioneer Valley, the region’s largest anti-poverty agency. BenEzra’s last day at the Amherst site will be on Oct. 10.
Beginning her tenure in 2015, Basler, a former professor, has overseen the design and delivery of the center’s major programs, from food and nutrition services to volunteer engagement, helping to meet the needs of thousands of area residents with dignity and respect in an inclusive environment.
“Together with our dedicated staff, volunteers, community members and supporters, I look forward to ensuring that all of our programs remain strong and that participants continue to find connection, hope, and the resources they need,” Basler said in a statement.
Basler’s job has included managing all program areas, supervising staff and planning and launching new and expanded programs ranging, both during the pandemic and with the Campus Pantry at the University of Massachusetts.
Jennifer Moyston, the board president, said Basler has been at the heart of the center’s service to the community.
“Her leadership ensures continuity and stability during this time of transition, and we are deeply grateful that she will be stepping into this role as we prepare for the next chapter,” Moyston said.
BenEzra, too, praised Basler for helping to shapeevery programmatic success at the center for a decade.
“Her deep knowledge of our community, strong leadership, and steady presence will ensure that the Amherst Survival Center continues to thrive in this time of transition,” BenEzra said.
