
Garden report: I harvested my first tomato. It was a sun gold, small and perfect.
The Canterbury bells, Stokes Aster, begonia and magenta day lily have bloomed. There are blossoms on the beans, cucumber and eggplant. The volunteer tomatoes are growing.

The Afro Semitic Experience will perform at the Porter Phelps Huntington House in its Wednesday Folk Traditions series July 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the sunken garden. David Chevan, the son of Al and Janet Chevan of Amherst, is a bassist with the group that has performed in the series before. Bring a picnic, chairs or blanket. The house is in Hadley. Tickets sold on site, cash only.

Thinking ahead: The Friends of the Amherst Survival Center will hold the third Pop -Up Closet Sept. 20 at the Amherst Farmer’s Market on the Common. To be a success, the Friends need donation of jewelry, scarves, wallets, purses and other accessories in good used condition. Please don’t donate clothing. Donations can be brought to the Senior Center until September. Thanks.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who put on the South Amherst Fourth of July Parade last week. It was a Norman Rockwell picture — kids, bikes, flags, dogs. And the weather was perfect. Children who marched in the parade are now bringing their children.
