Reminder: Wednesday, June 19 is Juneteenth. Public buildings, the post office, banks and libraries will be closed.

The holiday will be celebrated Saturday, June 15 on the Town Common from 3 to 6 p.m., sponsored by the DEI Department. The event includes music and representatives from community partners, who work to make the town strong and vibrant, according to a release. It’s free.

In addition, there will be a story slam, “Chains to Change,” on Saturday at 7 p.m. at The Drake. The event will showcase the evolution from historical struggles to modern movements for positive change. It’s free.

Garden report: I have a green, pea-size sun gold tomato. It should be ready in a week. I have harvested oregano, parsley, mint and scallions.

Brian Yellen of Amherst sent an email about the celebration of the beautiful Fort River on Saturday, June 15 at Griffey Park from 10 a.m. to noon that is free and open to the public.

The event is sponsored by the Fort River Watershed Association and will include information about improving the ecology and water quality in the river.

In addition, there will be river-themed games, a stream table, and a tour of active lamprey breeding sites. Refreshments will be served.

A reception to honor retiring Fire Chief Tim Nelson will be held Friday, June 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott in Hadley. It’s free and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served.

Following, an informal gathering and Toast & Roast will take place at The Amherst Public House on University Drive. That event requires registration. Check with Town Hall.
