Garden report: The peonies have bloomed. It’s May, they are early. The astilbe has also bloomed. The morning glory volunteers are up. They reseed every year.

The fence surrounding the raised bed is up. It’s a feeble attempt to keep the chipmunks and squirrels from taking bites out of the tomatoes.

David Sharken of Amherst sent me an email about the annual Puffer’s Pond Pancake Breakfast that will be held Saturday, June 1 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Mill River Recreation Area.

Besides the food, there will be a raffle, merch sale and music. The breakfast and donations help support maintaining the trails and beach. Checks made out to the Kestrel Trust, with a note for Puffer’s Pond, can be sent to Box 1016, Amherst, MA 01004.

Jeanne Horrigan and Ted Mone, Orchard Valley neighbors, sent a postcard from Alaska, which was a 22-hour trip from here. They wrote it is very beautiful. Sunrise is 4:30 a.m. and sunset is 11:30 p.m. Despite all the sunlight, planting doesn’t begin until June 1.

Speaking of Orchard Valley, Farmington Road was paved! It is such a joy to ride on a smooth surface.

Silverthorne Theater is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a three -show season this summer. It begins with the world premiere of “The Broken Machine” by Liz Duffy Adams, according to an email from my neighbor Gina Kaufman, who is also directing the show.

The play runs June 7-15 at the theater in Emily Dickinson Hall at Hampshire College.

It is a fast-moving, whimsical climate-change fantasy, set in the great outdoors in the not-too-distant future, according to Kaufman.
