HADLEY — Since 1971, Amherst Farmers Market vendors set up each Saturday through spring and summer and into the fall on the Town Common, with the weekly event ending just before Thanksgiving for an annual winter dormancy.
For the first time, beginning last Saturday, the organizers of the long-running market, along with some of those selling products, are continuing to be part of a weekly market held indoors, at Wancyzk Nursery at 166 Russell St., Hadley.
The start of the Winter Market for the Amherst Farmers Market is Saturday at 10 a.m. Each week, the market, which will run until 2 p.m., will be held in a heated greenhouse at the site, with a fire pit, hot chocolate and live music. Weekly events will be facilitated with the help of Wanzcyk’s staff, such as wreath-making and log box-making and arrangements in advance of the holidays.
David Machowski, manager and director of operations for the market, and John Spineti, the market’s president and treasurer, said this is a new venture. Though there had been a Winter Farmers Market at Hampshire Mall in recent years, with some of the same vendors, this is the first time the Amherst Farmers Market has a direct affiliation, partnership and governance of a winter market.
Meanwhile, the Winter Farmers Market at Hampshire Mall, which began in December 2017 in the Target corridor, will not be held this season.
