AMHERST — The town’s final two winners at the biennial election held on Nov. 7 are residents who got the most votes as write-in candidates for the positions they sought.

Judith Souweine of Bay Road earned 344 write-in votes, of 901 write-ins cast, to earn election as the town’s elector under the Oliver Smith Will. Souweine takes over for Carol Gray, who didn’t run.

Souweine topped the only other announced write-in candidate, F. Helena Donovan of Jeffrey Lane.

For the Amherst Housing Authority, Kevin Collins of Lessey Street got 10 write-in votes to remain on the panel. He joins incumbent David Williams, who was reelected after getting his name on the ballot.

Town Clerk Susan Audette said the third elected Housing Authority seat will need to be filled through the process outlined in the town charter. That includes a joint meeting of the Town Council and the remaining members of the Housing Authority, which also has a member appointed by the governor and another appointed by the tenants association.

Audette said it took about a day to go through all the write-in votes for all the positions on the ballot.
