Garden report: The lilac bush has several more blossoms. Some other people have told me they have blossoms on their lilac bushes. Happy to see that several of my plants are still blooming, offering great color.

Surprise! I looked out at my backyard Monday and there was a deer eating the grass. It looked at me, I looked back, iPad in hand, then it continued munching. I took pictures. I hope they can be printed with the column.

An Edith Bryon Art Event will be held at the Jones Library Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to a email from Kathy Lanza. Edith Byron was a painter and longtime supporter of the library and a member of the Friends of the Jones Library system.

Her paintings will be for sale via donation. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Jones Library system. These paintings are available thanks to Fred Bryon’s desire to support the Jones Library and to share Edith’s paintings with others.

One of her paintings graces a wall in the Children’s Room.

The annual Cranberry Fair will be held at the First Congregational Church on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to an email from Mary Sharma of Amherst. The event includes clothing, books, a white elephant sale, food and raffle. Free admission.

Andrew Arceci, music director of the Arcadia Players, sent me an email about a concert, “The Trumpet Shall Sound,” on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Hadley. Trumpeter Robinson Pyle will perform. Tickets are available on the website, arcadia players.org, or at the door.

Grace Church is holding a Harvest Festival on Saturday And Sunday, Oct. 21 and 22 at the church on the Town Common. On Saturday, a mini bazaar will be held on the lawn between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Musical performances are at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

A classical concert will be held Sunday at 4 p.m.

These events are free. The feast Saturday at 6 p.m. costs $85.

Sarah Dixwell Brown of Amherst was a first prize winner in the 2023 Annual Literary Awards given by the Connecticut Society of Genealogists for her book, “Regicide in the Family: Finding John Dixwell.” She went to Wallingford, Connecticut to pick up her award. She has given talks about her book to several organizations in town.
