Garden report: The tulips have bloomed as well as the dandelions. An enterprising bird is building a nest on the pole I use to hang flowering pots on my porch. It is only a few inches between the pole and wall but there is a modest home for the babies. The construction has created a lot of debris that won’t be cleaned until the babies learn to fly.
“May is nearly always cooler than we think it ought to be and then it’s too hot. A truly delightful month. May dawns are pageants in the sky. ” Fred Cole wrote that in 1963.

Brian Messier, artistic director and conductor of the Valley Winds, sent me an email about the ensemble’s “Poor Poet” concert May 22 at 4 p.m. at Northampton High School. The concert features horn soloist Joshua Michal and the winning composition from the International Composition Competition.
The Northampton High School Wind Ensemble, directed by Paul Kinsman, will be on the program. The concert is free to the public.
I am listing the program now even though it is a month away because May gets very busy.
For example , Sunday, May 1, the public is invited to the Yiddish Book Center Community Day open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you can attend the Jones Library Open House from noon until 2 p.m.

The Amherst Farmers Market has opened for the season, running every Saturday on the Town Common from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Last year I was reminded that the first market was canceled because of snow. Full disclosure, I help at the Sunset Farm booth.
