Garden report: The pulmanaria has bloomed, the willow tree has a lovely pale green color, the hosta shoots are up. I will plant radish seeds and scallion starts this week in the raised beds.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampshire County will hold its fundraising Daffodil Run Sunday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is a 10K run and 5K walk/run. Register at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampshire County website.

The Amherst Community Theater will present “Broadway Melody” Friday, April 29, at 7 p.m.and Saturday, April 30, at 2 p.m. at the Amherst Regional Middle School Auditorium. This is a concert of songs performed by talented area musicians.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children at the door. David Mullins, who sent me an email about this, said only cash or checks will be accepted.
Proof of vaccination and masks are required.

Jeanne Esposito of South Amherst is organizing the annual South Amherst Fourth of July parade that will be held at Fiddlers Green, the South Amherst Common. Volunteers from anywhere are needed to help set up and clean up. Give her a call at 253-9272 if you can help.
The parade is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome.

U.S. Sen. Edward Markey was quoted in a Gazette story as saying he attended an event decades ago at the Amherst Regional Middle School auditorium that was attended by 1,000 people.
I have been in the auditorium many, many times. It seats 600.
As a reporter, it was my practice to count the house — those present at meetings, receptions and rallies. With Zoom, counting attendance is a challenge.

The Valley Light Opera will hold auditions for “Die Fledermaus ” April 28 and 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. and April 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 98 North Maple St. in Hadley.
The performances will be held in English in November.
