Indoor garden report: The amaryllis in the red wax ball is now 5 inches high and the side shoot is about 3 inches. The hyacinth bulb shoots emerged. I brought the pot up from the basement, watered it and am now watching the shoots slowly grow.

With the sunshine and warmer temperatures, I hung my laundry outside Sunday and Monday. The sheets were so soft and smelled fresh. I can’t think of how often I could say that — hanging laundry outside in December and the items didn’t freeze. It’s a gift.

It’s interesting to see the changes in landscape as one drives around. The Kentucky Fried Chicken building at the mall is being torn down. A backyard on Pomeroy Lane was eliminated and scraped bare earth was left as a result of work on the power lines. A lot of trees and shrubs bit the dust.

Five people will be rewarded for making purchases in Amherst. Shoppers received red tickets for shopping downtown.

A drawing for five lucky red ticket holders will be held at Kendrick Park on Saturday at 3 p.m. You have to be there if your number is drawn.

The event, sponsored by the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce and the Business Improvement District, includes horse rides, music and getting a chance to try out the playground equipment.

Orchard Valley has its own modest version of the Merry Maple. A small decorated evergreen tree is located by the path that leads to Markert’s Pond on Pondview Drive. It was installed last year and residents provided various decorations. It’s up again this year with some of the decorations that survived, but more are welcome.

Thanks to neighbor Adrienne Terrizzi for brightening up our neighborhood. One year we may have a public ceremony.
