AMHERST — A bronze horse sculpture stolen from a gravesite at Wildwood Cemetery was recovered by Amherst Police at a Springfield pawnshop, following an investigation into the theft.
Rebecca Fricke, general manager of the Amherst cemetery, said Tuesday that the monument, first reported stolen on Oct. 19, was located by police at the end of October.
“Wildwood Cemetery is working with the family to reinstall the horse to the stone base,” Fricke said.
The monument is at the final resting places of late poet and Tufts University professor Deborah Sugarbaker Digges and her late spouse, former Becker College President Franklin Loew.
Police Chief Scott Livingstone said the investigation remains active. Livingstone said a suspect has been identified and the managers of the pawnshop where the bronze horse was for sale are cooperating.
Fricke said she and the other leaders of the cemetery appreciate the work done by Amherst police in getting back the monument.
