I agree with the need for more parking in Amherst and wonder why one option hasn’t been raised among the alternatives being considered — adding a second tier to the Boltwood space.
I seem to remember that town meeting authorized reinforced support columns for the current lot in the event an upper deck was added later. This would obviate all the back and forth over where to add new spaces.
And while we’re at it, restaurants are right to be upset over this issue as paid parking is the rule until 8 p.m. If we’re really interested in supporting downtown businesses, why not have 6 p.m. as the cutoff, as is the case in Northampton?
