Irv Rhodes could be spending his retirement focused on his family and personal interests. But that’s not who Irv is. He cares deeply about our community, especially about the future of our town’s children.
Irv has been a school teacher, middle school librarian, Assistant Superintendent for Children’s Services, as well as held positions in the areas of business and finance. This vast experience gives him a unique perspective on our schools, which enables him to focus on excellence and equity.
Irv has served as chair of our School Committee in the past and is among a few people in Amherst who understand the financial and equity struggles facing our schools and the forces driving them. His vast knowledge comes from serving on Amherst’s Finance and Budget committees and as co-chair of United Way’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. In addition, Irv served on the Crocker Farm School Council.
Irv is a man who does not hesitate to ask thought-provoking questions, like: “Does your child’s playgroup reflect the diversity of the town?” “Who do you hang out with consistently, and does it reflect the town’s diversity?” “If you think of 10 people you know, whether close friends or just acquaintances, how many are BIPOC?”
He is committed to ensuring that all our kids receive appropriate instructional resources so they can learn, grow, and flourish in a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment. As Irv says, “I strongly believe that ability is universal but opportunity is not, and I will work tirelessly to ensure that all students have access to opportunities so they are able to compete on a level playing field.”
That is what we want: options for all our children, equipping them to succeed in an increasingly difficult world. We hope you will join us in voting for Irv Rhodes for School Committee.
