I pass the house on blocks on South Pleasant Street just past the president’s house, almost daily on my way home from town. The house is off its foundation and by now has been moved to its new site.
I remember when the old Amherst Record building (a former house) at 109 Main St. was moved to 409 Main St. to make way for the new police station. The move attracted lots of viewers and it was well photographed.

Jeff Bohne, South Church moderator, sent me an email about the return of the summer chicken barbecue. It will be held Tuesday, Aug. 17, with pickup from 5 to 6 p.m. on the South Amherst Common, known as Fiddler’s Green. The menu includes potato salad, cole slaw, tricky pickles and brownie. A vegetarian option is available. Cost is $ 15. Call 253-2977 for reservations.
The Amherst Community Band will perform on the common that night at 6 p.m.
Bring chairs or a blanket. The concert is free but donations are always welcome.
Dinner and a concert, what a wonderful way to end the summer.

Hannah Brooks-Motl, the assistant acquisition editor at Amherst College Press, sent me an email about a new publication, “Writing in Time: Emily Dickinson’s Master Hours” by Marta Werner. It includes “stunning archival images and new transcriptions of documents,” she wrote. The good news it is free to read and download. Visit acpress.amherst.edu.
“ACP is an open-access press housed in the Amherst College library. We publish scholarly books and books of interest to general readers. Open access means there are no costs to read our books online. We publish new titles regularly so please check out our website for a complete look at our catalog!” she wrote.

I received an actual postcard depicting Losinj in Croatia from Mary Carey and Brian Schultz of Amherst. The stamp was not canceled.
They wrote they spent a day in Zagreb, the Croatian capital. They visited a national park and Plitrice Lake, saw storks in nests and the devastation from the war and learned about a popular music called Turbofolk.
