Counter to Sarah McKee who argues that Amherst is “on the wrong side of it,” (“Legal costs to defend library petition count pile up for town,” July 9 Bulletin), I support the town for doing what is necessary to defend the decision to fund renovation and expansion of the Jones Library.

The responsibility for the town incurring these legal costs lies with those who have aimed to subvert the Town Council’s decision to support the Jones project, a decision made after an extensive process characterized with full and accurate information on the project and with ample public input.

In contrast, the petition by those aiming to stop the project was driven by misinformation and distortions of fact. Amherst has a chance to have a renovated, expanded Jones Library that would better serve all citizens and that is funded in a financially prudent manner. Let’s hope that the town continues to support the decision and that the obstructive minority that aims to prevent the project from moving forward does not succeed.
