HADLEY — A Springfield man in possession of an unlicensed handgun, and with marijuana packaged for sale, was arrested following a traffic stop on Rocky Hill Road late Saturday afternoon, according to Hadley Police.

At 5:14 p.m., a vehicle traveling 58 mph in a 30 mph zone was pulled over, and officers upon approaching the vehicle detected a heavy odor of burnt marijuana, and observed two empty handgun holsters.

While speaking with the driver outside of the vehicle, he admitted that there was a handgun under his seat, and that he did not have a license for it, police said.

A search of the vehicle revealed individually wrapped bags of marijuana, a scale, cash and other indicators of the sale of narcotics. The firearm, a semi-automatic pistol, identified as an FN Five-seven, was also located, along with two, 20-round magazines.

The 24-year-old man, whose name is not being released until after his arraignment, was taken into custody on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs, speeding, possession of a dangerous weapon, a firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a large capacity magazine, and possession with intent to distribute a class D drug, marijuana.

He is being held at Hampshire Jail and House of Correction in lieu of $5,000 bail.
