DEERFIELD — The town is starting to roll out installation of six bicycle racks it received through a grant several years ago, locations for which are being discussed.

The grant — which was most likely received through the Franklin Regional Council of Governments (FRCOG), according to Selectboard member Trevor McDaniel — allowed the town to get six bicycle racks. However, until recently, those racks were stored away and never installed around town.

Assistant Town Administrator Jennifer Gannett explained during a Selectboard meeting last month that she was following up on a question from the Energy Resources Committee about the bicycle racks, when she reached out to Highway Department Superintendent Kevin Scarborough about installing one at Town Hall.

“I started with asking Kevin, and he so nicely installed a bicycle rack at Town Hall,” Gannett said. “It looks wonderful.”

That started a discussion with the Energy Resources Committee about how many other bicycle racks the town had from the grant, and other potential locations for them.

“I just figured we could just do one at a time, so it’s not so overwhelming for Kevin and his team,” Gannett said.

Frontier Regional School has already expressed interest in two bicycle racks. Tilton Library was suggested as a possible location, too, and McDaniel said he would like to hold onto one for the park on North Main Street.

Scarborough recommended putting in just one rack at Frontier before installing a second.

“If there’s use, we’ll go ahead and put in a second one,” he said. “If not, we could re-utilize it someplace else.”
