The calendar has turned: It’s December. Our virtual world continues. Family holiday celebrations will be on Zoom or Facetime again.
Some virtual events include a celebration of Chanukah Dec. 15 at 5 p.m. hosted by Amherst Neighbors. It’s the fifth night since Chanukah begins Dec. 10.
Arcadia Players will present Handel’s “Messiah” Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. on YouTube. The concert was performed last year at Our Lady of the Valley church in Easthampton.

South Amherst residents are happy that the work on West Pomeroy Lane is finally done. It took months to get the water pipes out and the road paved. Fortunately the weather held since the paving was done the day before Thanksgiving. How many times did we forget the road was closed and had to backtrack on East Hadley Road or Bay Road to get to Orchard Valley. The bad pipes were placed on the side of the road. They were in awful shape.

The weather did hold since I saw golfers playing at the Amherst Golf Club on the day after Thanksgiving.
I was also able to hang out laundry on Sunday. If the temperature is 50 degrees and the sun is out, I will hang out my laundry. However, it is rare to do it this late in November.

An evergreen tree is lit on the South Amherst Common, know as Fiddler’s Green. I haven’t seen it yet, but a friend told me it has LED lights this year. The South Amherst Thursday Club, of which I am a member, sponsored it for many years. The Torrey family has assumed the responsibility supported by neighbors. Some musicians from South Church used to play for the initial lighting.
We could use some bright lights this winter.
