WHATELY — Legislators have recognized the Covestro manufacturing plant on Fairview Way as Manufacturer of the Year in the Hampshire, Franklin and Worcester Senate district.
Covestro, which is known for its production of polymers and high-performance plastics, was nominated to receive the award by Sen. Jo Comerford, D-Northampton, and was recognized in late October. The company’s products range from the raw materials used in polyurethanes to precursors for paints, coatings, adhesives and sealants.
“The materials created at Covestro’s local facility are critical in Massachusetts’ fight against COVID-19,” Comerford said. “I’m grateful to Covestro and their workers who have demonstrated an unprecedented response to the needs of our region and our commonwealth during the pandemic and am honored to have this opportunity to recognize their work.”
Because of its role in producing products to protect frontline health care workers, like face shield material and protective gowns, Covestro has remained open as an essential business throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Everyone has had to make a lot of changes and sacrifices as a result of the pandemic, so the timing of this award is particularly special,” said Jim Boehm, general manager of specialty films at Covestro. “Our employees deserve to be recognized for how well they’ve adapted during these challenging times and I’m proud to accept the award on their behalf.”
According to a press release from Comerford’s office, Covestro employs more than 180 people at its location on Fairview Way. Although the plant is geographically located in Whately, it has a South Deerfield mailing address.
In addition to the work done by Covestro’s employees in making health care materials, Covestro’s employees are also passionate about giving back. According to the release, Covestro provides employees with 16 hours of paid time for community service and many are active with the United Way of Franklin County. Additionally, Covestro partners with the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the MassHire Franklin Hampshire Workforce Board and Greenfield Community College to recruit workers.
