Monday is Labor Day, an opportunity to celebrate those who work. However, with so many unemployed, it’s hard to get excited.
It has been the traditional end of summer day, even though summer has two more weeks to go. If you get together with friends for a picnic or barbecue, keep safe.
Some friends have been having driveway lunches or teas this summer. The advantage of outdoor get-togethers means you don’t have to vacuum or dust.

Apologies to all for citing an incorrect day for the primary election in last week’s column. I so had it in my mind that Monday was Sept. 1. I will do better for November.

Linda Marston, one of the postcard winners, sent me a fabulous picture of a flatbread covered with the tomatoes and basil I gave her. It was a food magazine photo. You could see the melted cheese glisten. She said she also made pesto and put it on pasta. I can forward the picture to those interested.
The postcard request struck a chord and two people promised to send cards, one all the way from the Berkshires. Postcards can be sent to my home or dropped off on the porch to save postage.

My iPad had abandoned me for 4½ days. My storage was full and I was unable to send or receive email. I eliminated the news, weather, YouTube, voice memos and several apps.
It didn’t work; I was still short. So for a few days I was information-deficient and it was OK. Several people said that seemed like a good idea. I did read the newspapers and listen to the radio.
However, I have a Monday deadline to send my column via email to the Gazette. I asked several people if they knew about cloud storage and iPads. One neighbor came to the rescue and here it is.
Typing my column on an electric typewriter at the former Amherst Record, I could never imagine fast-forwarding several decades to typing on a small, flat device without wires in bed in pajamas.
