TEDxDeerfield returns

The 5th annual TEDxDeerfield takes place at Deerfield Academy Saturday, Feb. 16, bringing talks on a wide range of subjects, as well as poetry readings, music, art displays and more. The free event, from 3-10 p.m., includes presentations from a number of area professionals, including Amherst landscape photographer Michael Zide and Northampton artist Mark Guglielmo.

Zide, an instructor at the former Hallmark Institute of Photography and Maine Media Workshops, will give a talk and visual presentation at 5 p.m. at the Hess Center of the Arts on his landscape photography, with a focus on sense of place and how people “see” a landscape, based on individual experiences and perceptions.

Also at 5 pm., Guglielmo will speak about his photomosaic exhibition, “Cuba in Transition,” at Deerfield Academy’s von Auersperg Gallery, in a discussion moderated by Wilson Valentín-Escobar, who teaches American Studies at Hampshire College.

Da Capo Chamber Players come to Mount Holyoke College

The Da Capo Chamber Players, known for their unique style of ensemble playing for almost 50 years, come to Pratt Music Hall at Mount Holyoke College Feb. 15 and 16. Founded in 1970, the group has won a number of awards and has performed over 150 works written for them by composers such as Philip Glass, David Lang and Joan Tower.

On Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m., the group will perform a number of contemporary songs as well as several in honor of Black History Month, including Valerie Coleman’s “Portrait of Langston,” Luciano Berio’s “O King” and David Sanford’s “Dogma 74.”

Also on the 15th, there will be an open rehearsal at 3 p.m. On Feb. 16, an open masterclass takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All of these events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Carol Wrobleski at cwrobles@mtholyoke.edu.

‘Overtures and Arias’: operatic hits by local orchestra at Smith College

On Saturday, Feb. 16, the Northampton Arts Council presents “Overtures and Arias,” a concert featuring operatic hits performed by the Panopera Orchestra, from Northampton’s artist-led opera company. The concert is a part of Northampton’s ongoing Winter Arts Festival, “Four Sundays in February.”

The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. at Sweeney Concert Hall at Smith College. According to press notes, the concert features a “30-piece live Orchestra of local professionals and soloists in a concert playing a variety of operatic favorites,” including works by Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi and other composers.
