Town Council should examine priorities

Interesting to hear that one of the first orders of business that the Amherst Town Council has taken is to form a committee to combat climate change and that committee will be charged with preparing a plan within 90 days that will make the town carbon neutral with very specific deadlines to protect the environment. Interesting that they have a strict 90 day limit on solving climate change but they have given themselves a full generous 15 years to build a new elementary school… or not. Hard to tell because that wasn’t the first thing they were concerned with. World climate change was.

Too bad the councilors aren’t concerned with the environment our children are breathing and living in the existing Amherst elementary schools like Fort River. Our kids are living in that environment today… not in 90 days or 15 years. Today. And everyone has known about it for the last three years.

No one does anything about that because it requires real sacrifice. Money. Property tax increases. Sacrifice. But not in Amherst. No, Amherst will skip over the children so they can get some pats-on-the-back for protecting the environment. Well, we all want to protect the environment. But we have to know where to start and the start in Amherst is obvious. It’s building a new elementary school because that’s our children’s environment. But I guess there aren’t enough pats on the back for that. This town should be ashamed of itself. After, of course, it has become carbon neutral in 90 days.
