As I write, my eyes are flooded with tears of grief, sadness, sorrow and rage. While we scurry around buying gifts few of us need, we are witness to an indescribable sorrow… a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl, Jakelin Caal Maquin, dies while in the custody of our government. This is not an unfortunate and horrific accident. This is the result of a purposeful, deliberate government policy to throw fear at the feet of those who have chosen to risk fleeing poverty, violence and death to come to America, the home of the free and the brave. Yes, it does take a certain type of bravery and courage to sit on the sidelines while young girls die unnecessarily. America, the exceptional oasis in a cruel and unjust world. If this is what we have become I, for one, want no part of it.
