A 27-year-old Belchertown man died in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Carthage, Maine, on Sunday afternoon, state wildlife officials said.
Taylor Curtin was driving his friend’s 2007 Can AM 800 ATV in Rocky Mountain Terrain Park — an area with off-roading trails and camp sites — when it went airborne and hit a tree around 1:30 p.m, according to a statement from Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
He was not wearing a helmet and Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife officials suspect speed was a cause of the fatal accident.
Emergency medical services declared him dead at the scene of the crash, the statement said.
Curtin, who attended Belchertown High School, was camping with friends and driving the ATV back to his campsite when the crash occurred, according to the statement.
Carthage is a small town near Rumford, Maine, about 50 miles northwest of the state capital, Augusta.
