Amherst’s government may be changing but the prospects and challenges that face the town won’t be. So when it comes to voting for the counselor at large position it’s important to consider the candidate’s experience and insight into the town. Andy Steinberg is just such a candidate.
I first met Andy when he was managing Western Massachusetts Legal Services and I was impressed by the commitment he showed towards disadvantage people. His interest in fairness and problem solving showed itself in his commitment to Amherst as well. First as a town meeting member beginning in 1996, as a nine-year member of the Finance Committee, continuing until he was elected Selectman in 2014. Add to those seven years on the budget coordinating committee and two on capital planning.
All of this work provides Steinberg with a thorough knowledge of municipal finance, both Amherst specific and the broad legal underpinnings that apply to every community in the Commonwealth. That’s allowed him to play a critical role in regional school assessment method working group, a task that will continue without regard to the town’s form of government. The new council will need someone with Andy’s experience in shaping effective legislation aimed at responsible development, in negotiating new paths forward, and untangling the complex situations we face as one of the 351 communities in the state.
You have three votes for counselor at large. Andy Steinberg certainly deserves one of them.
