The Hopkins Academy boys soccer team celebrated a pair of firsts before its game against Renaissance was cut short.
Nate Waldon and Bobby Klesch each scored their first varsity goal as the Golden Hawks beat the Phoenix, 2-1, Tuesday at Marshall Roy Park in Springfield.
Klesch’s goal came four minutes into the second half and broke a tie. Officials called the game 10 minutes into the second half due to lightning.
Klesch sent a hard shot on goal from outside the 18. The Renaissance goalie had trouble fielding the wet ball and it squirted into the goal.
Waldon made it 1-0 early in the first half with an assist from Dougie Pierce.
“It was great for both of those boys to get their first goal,” Hopkins coach C.J. Holt said. “They’ve been playing really well.”
Eric Berg made three saves in the win. Jupiter Fetler played well at center back for the Golden Hawks (4-5, 4-3 Schmid).
South Hadley 4, Smith Academy 1 — The Tigers trailed 1-0, but recovered and cruised to the win at home.
Jonas Clarke, Liam Joy and Max McCurdy (assist) each scored. South Hadley also received an own goal.
Chris Casolari had one assist, while Clayton Koppi (five saves) and Xavier Butzer (three) split time in net for the Tigers (7-2-0).
Sam Dobson scored an unassisted goal with in the first two minutes, and Ryan Belina made six saves for the Falcons (2-7), who played better in the second half, according to Smith coach Jason Duncan.
Granby 3, Gateway Regional 3 — Dylan Moriarty scored the equalizer for the Rams in the 53rd minute. He also had two assists.
Liam Brown and Michael Flaherty also scored for Granby (0-8-1, 0-6-1 Schmid), while Nolan Sullivan added an asssist. Dominic Nomakeo made three saves.
Frontier Regional 2, Monson 0 — Timmy Barrington scored five minutes into the first half, and Connor Bagdon tallied an insurance goal in a rain-soaked second half that was called due to weather with 28 minutes remaining.
Mahar 9, Amherst Regional 1 — Alyssa Smith scored, and Lily Gleason made 17 saves for the Hurricanes (0-7).
