Bruce Penniman, of Amherst, sent an email about a culinary opportunity — a West African take-out meal. The choices include vegetable thiou (vegan), a chunky vegetable stew, and chicken yassa, chicken legs cooked with onions and olives.
The dinner is a fundraiser, he said. The Sene-Gambian scholars have traveled to West Africa, and are raising funds to bring students from The Gambia over here. The cost is $10 per meal or 4 for $35, which includes a donation. Orders should be placed by May 15 with pickup on May. 18. The lilacs are in full bloom, all the trees are completely leafed and everything is so green in Europe, at least the countries I was in.
I just returned from visit to Poland, Austria and Germany that included a land tour and river cruise on the Danube. This is my postcard to you.
The weather was glorious every day. I had pierogis in Poland, Wiener schnitzel in Vienna, Linzer torte in Linz, wheat beer on a boat in the Danube gorge, goose in a salt mine and the best pretzel ever in Straubing, Germany. We had pretzels before and after that bakery visit and they couldn’t compare.
We nearly joined a May Day parade as we walked through a town square but didn’t dance at the many May poles.
This was a classic tour with castles, palaces, churches, museums gardens and monuments. I have pictures and am willing to share.
I get to experience Spring again since my lilac is just starting to bloom and the trees have to open their leaves.
