NORTHAMPTON — Two men in court Tuesday denied involvement in a December incident in Amherst in which a man was shot in the leg and struck in the head by a metal pipe.

Malek F. Bosmond, 24, of Amherst, pleaded not guilty in Hampshire Superior Court to unlawful possession of a firearm; assault by means of a dangerous weapon, a firearm; reckless assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, a firearm; possession of marijuana with intent to distribute; and witness intimidation. He was released on $1,500 bail previously posted in a lower court. He is being represented by attorney Alfred Chamberland.

Akieli Brown, 24, of Amherst, pleaded not guilty to assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, a metal pipe. He was released on conditions previously set in lower court. He is being represented by attorney Jon Heyman.

Police officers responded to a report of a disturbance to the 500 block of Mill Valley Estates on Dec. 20 at 12:38 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found a wounded man who had been shot in the leg and struck in the head by a metal pipe. The man was taken by Amherst Fire Department ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.

Both previously pleaded not guilty in Eastern Hampshire District Court to charges relating to the incident. The next court dates for both men are scheduled for July 23.
