AMHERST — The Amherst College football player who died in Mexico did not kill himself, according to the school.
Amherst President Carolyn A. Martin posted a statement on the school’s website, providing an update on the death of Andrew Dorogi.
Dorogi, who was a senior, was found dead on March 16 in Mexico City while on spring break.
“The cause of Andrew’s death is still unknown and under investigation,” Martin wrote. “We know from his family that he did not die of suicide.
“Andrew was loved for his friendliness, joyfulness, sense of fun, and inclusiveness, and we will create an opportunity on campus to come together in his memory.”
Mexican authorities are taking the lead on the investigation. Dorogi was from Cleveland, and played tight end for Amherst College’s Division III football team.
Martin wrote that the school is also grieving the recent deaths of Jeffrey Ferguson, a professor, from cancer, and student Christopher Collins, of Wakefield, Rhode Island, whose body was found on campus March 29.
“Chris’ family has been open and has allowed us to be open about the fact that he took his own life after a long struggle with severe mental illness,” Martin wrote.
“Every one of these three people had a significant impact on our community and each one of them will be sorely missed.”
Noting that new losses may call up past losses for people, and prompt feelings of vulnerability, anxiety and sadness, Martin encouraged members of the campus community to seek support if necessary from among the college’s available resources.
