In 1996 I wrote about the Immanuel Lutheran Church potluck for the Rev. John Stendhal and his wife Suzanne. I noted the seven-layer Jello dish that was perfect. The item was printed in the Jan. 8, 1996, edition of the New Yorker under the “All’s Right with the World Department.”
The item was submitted by “A devoted Lehrer Report Reader.”
Fast forward to 2018. I went to local nursing home to see a friend. While there a social worker hands me a $5 bill (my first thought: I’m coming here more often). Then all was revealed: Jonathan Fetler, the social worker, submitted the New Yorker item. He was paid $10 and the $5 was my half.
He also gave me a copy of the check and the New Yorker page with the submission.
What a wonderful surprise.
Thank you Jonathan for being a devoted reader and for bringing back many good memories.
