BELCHERTOWN — No charges will be filed against the driver of car that hit and killed a local woman last month.

The Northwestern district attorney’s office announced Sept. 7 that it would not seek criminal charges in the crash that killed 65-year-old Margaret F. Kemp.

Kemp was struck by a car at the intersection of Routes 9 and 202 just before 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 17. The vehicle was traveling east on Route 9 and making a right turn onto Route 202 when Kemp was hit, said Mary Carey, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office. She died as a result of her injuries, according to Kemp’s death certificate.

The car remained on the scene following the crash and the driver was cooperative with authorities. Neither drugs nor alcohol use was a factor in the collision, nor was cellphone use, according to the district attorney’s office.

A Main Street resident, Kemp was remembered by Belchertown and Amherst residents as a woman with steadfast routines and a constant presence.

A fundraising campaign has been setup in Kemp’s name to help cover the cost of burial, a headstone and a bench in her honor to be placed on the Belchertown common. The fundraising campaign for Kemp can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/margaret-kemp-memorial.
