Garden report: The sedum and New England asters have bloomed. I am still harvesting tomato, cucumber, broccoli and pepper. If anyone needs some dill seed heads, call me.

Sonia Nieto of Amherst will receive the James Squire Award from the National Council of Teachers of English in November. She is cited for her outstanding service. She had a transforming influence and made a lasting intellectual contribution to the profession, according to the letter announcing her award. She taught at the University of Massachusetts.

Fernando Molina of Amherst is having an exhibit of his photography, “A Nature’s Song,” at the Jones Library this month. His wife, Lillian, is the daughter of Glen and Nellie Gordon of Amherst.

Beth Goren of Amherst won her fifth prize from the Dancing Poetry contest. Her poem will be read this month at the San Francisco Palace of the Legion of Honor, according to an email she sent. She wrote that she traveled Amtrak three straight days each way to celebrate a wedding among friends who built, “an amazing log home above a wild river just south of Glacier Nat’l Park in the ‘70s. The icing on the cake of this trip? A private plane ride back to Amtrak from the family’s newest home-built the boonies of East Oregon.”

The History Bite Series at the Strong House begins began its fall season Sept. 8 at 12:15 and continues every other Friday. The next is Sept. 22. The series is free and sponsored by the Amherst Historical Society.

The connections to Houston and Florida are strong here with families having relatives and most of us know someone in those areas. Their safety and well being is on our minds. Faith communities and organizations are taking up collections. Help if you can.
