AMHERST

A 50-year-old Leeds man is being summoned to court on a charge of open and gross lewdness following an incident at Puffer’s Pond on July 30, police said.

An 18-year-old man and two 14-year-old boys, all from Amherst, are being summoned to court on charges of breaking and entering during the nighttime to commit a felony, malicious destruction of property over $250 and larceny over $250 after a police investigation that included July 27 determined they were involved in a break-in to Wild Side Smoke Shop on College Street on the morning of July 23, police said.

A driver is being summoned to court on a charge of leaving the scene of a property damage accident following a crash into a tree and a sign on Triangle Street July 25 at 1:11 p.m., police said.

A 20-year-old Holyoke man was arrested July 25 at 12:44 a.m. on Meadow Street on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a defective brake light, police said.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

12:55 a.m. – People gazing at stars at Mount Pollux Conservation Area were reminded the park closes at night.

4:25 p.m. – A man who approached a woman withdrawing cash from an ATM on College Street and demanding money from her was not located.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

4:26 p.m. – A large pig loose at Puffton Village was returned to its farm.

MOTOR VEHICLE

ACCIDENTS

8:32 a.m. – Both vehicles were towed following a crash with no personal injuries at the intersection of South East and Main streets, police said.

12:16 p.m. – One driver complained about back pain, but refused treatment, following a minor two-car accident at the intersection of Northampton Road and Lincoln Avenue, police said.

TUESDAY, JULY 25

DISTURBANCES

9:23 p.m. – A man who entered a downtown restaurant and then cursed at several customers and employees fled when police were called.

10:50 p.m. – Youths banging on the door to a Southpoint Apartments residence were sent on their way.

VANDALISM

7:05 a.m. – A vehicle drove through a bunker on the Cherry Hill Golf Course sometime overnight, causing minor damage.

5:14 p.m. – A portion of a yard on Stony Hill Road was ripped up the previous night, and someone threw a number of pine cones at the home.

NOISE COMPLAINTS

10:09 p.m. – Youths were being loud while playing with flashlights and chasing each other outside Village Park. A parent was contacted to have them go inside for the night.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 26

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

10:59 p.m. – A Colonial Village woman reported her neighbor tossed water balloons and other items at her residence.

CITIZEN ASSISTANCE

2:38 p.m. – Police removed several youths hanging out on the dam at Puffer’s Pond.

4:47 p.m. – People reported to police that a man was standing at the intersection of Amity and South Pleasant streets with a sign stating “kill the media.” Since the man was not causing any issues, he was allowed to continue to express his free speech.

DISTURBANCES

8:26 a.m. – Police kept the peace at a North Amherst home between a landlord who is not permitted to enter the residence and her tenant.

8:30 a.m. – A Belchertown Road resident requested additional police patrols after seeing suspicious people jog by his home. They were not located.

VANDALISM

7:25 p.m. – A shirtless man seen punching a Hobart Lane home, causing minor damage to the siding, fled before police got there.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

11:22 a.m. – A woman reported her puppy suffered a neck injury after an unleashed golden retriever attacked it while being walked by another woman at Amethyst Brook Conservation Area. Police were unable to identify the owner of the offending dog.

10:04 p.m. – Police assisted an Amherst farmer get a cow back into its pen.

MOTOR VEHICLE

ACCIDENTS

9:54 a.m. – A trailer carrying an excavator got stuck under the railroad underpass on South East Street, causing extensive damage to the trailer, police said. The vehicle was freed after about 90 minutes, with the road closed for the duration of the incident. The bridge was not damaged.

TRAFFIC

11:49 a.m. – Police warned a driver who attempted to exit the Boltwood parking garage through the pedestrian tunnel to Main Street.

THURSDAY, JULY 27

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

12:14 p.m. – Homeless people were reported loitering on property off Pine Street near Mill River. Officers determined that a father and son were fishing. They were warned to extinguish their campfire.

12:35 p.m. – Police contacted a North Amherst property owner after finding a kicked-in door that left the building unsecured, and homeless people appearing to live inside it.

12:36 p.m. – A woman called police from a private downtown parking lot after being accosted by two men claiming they would contact a tow company to remove her vehicle. Police determined the men are employees of a parking service company recently hired by the lot’s owner.

9:50 p.m. – Puffton Village residents reported a man was outside looking into windows of apartments. He was not located by police.

DISTURBANCES

2:10 a.m. – Police separated intoxicated men at Colonial Village who were fighting over possession of a cellphone.

RECOVERED PROPERTY

11:24 a.m. – Fireworks were reported set off in the area of Crocker Farm School. Police responded and found a battery left in the parking lot. Firefighters were contacted to remove the object.

LARCENY

2:29 p.m. – More than $100 worth of Red Bull and Monster energy drink product was reported stolen from the Big Y Supermarket.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

11:09 a.m. – A bat flying in a Bayberry Lane garage was removed by police.

TRAFFIC

9:14 a.m. – The Department of Public Works was contacted after 35 gallons of white paint fell from a truck onto North Pleasant Street near Massachusetts Avenue. The paint was removed with assistance from a private company.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

3:32 a.m. – A woman reported someone called her while she was in North Amherst and threatened that she would be robbed. No additional information was available.
