BELCHERTOWN — A Holyoke man accused of stealing a laptop and sneakers from a University of Massachusetts Amherst dormitory room denied charges in court on Monday.
Mi’Shawn Scott, 18, pleaded not guilty in Eastern Hampshire District Court to charges of breaking and entering a building in the daytime for a felony, larceny under $250, attempting to commit a crime and two charges of larceny over $250.
UMass Police received a report from a resident of dormitory Lewis Hall that his room had been broken into and several items were taken.
The student told police a $2,000 laptop, a $400 Google cellphone and an $80 pair of Adidas sneakers were taken, according to court documents.
A student down the hall from the dorm room first reported that someone entered his dorm room while he was in it and left without taking anything, police said.
Following the incidents, UMass Police issued a crime alert with photos taken of the suspect by security cameras. Police said they received three anonymous tips identifying the suspect as Scott as well as a call from Scott’s father, David Gainey.
Scott’s bail was set at $100.
