Airbnb presents an opportunity for government to reach a hand into our pockets and purses for its “fair share” of individual entrepreneurs’ ingenuity and labor in order that it may continue to enlarge itself. (“Growth in Airbnb scene raises red flags,” May 26.)
When did Americans become so eager to allow this confiscation of their property and this proposed invasion of their private homes? In addition to the 3 percent tax charged by Airbnb, the state is considering a 5 percent tax along with a proposed 6 percent local tax under the pretense of guaranteeing the safety of guests who might be eating something not officially inspected and approved. Airbnb hosts are required to pay an income tax on their earnings as well.
I have stayed in rooms offered by Airbnb and have found the organization to be successful in regulating itself. I know of hosts who have been removed from the group for not being considerate or hospitable, for offering a room that did not match its description, for having rooms that were not spotless and for not following company protocol.
The most thorough vetting of both hosts and guests is achieved by evaluations completed immediately after each stay, where both sides are asked to give details about each other and make recommendations that will determine their continued participation, weighing heavily on future bookings.
The idea of entering someone’s home to inspect and grant licenses and permits is a real invasion of privacy. There was a reason that the founders were concerned about taxation and the issues covered in the Bill of Rights. They knew what happens when governments have unlimited power over their citizens’ personal lives. It seems that governments don’t create anything, but are ready and waiting to help themselves to the profits of successful and resourceful individuals.
I’m wondering if I will be required to get an inspection and a permit before hosting my good friend next year, since I will be serving her food?
