Sylvia Torres, 46, of Longmeadow Drive, was arrested June 4 at 12:23 a.m. on West Pomeroy lane on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle to endanger and failure to stay within marked lanes after the vehicle she was driving went off the road for 171 feet and hit a tree, police said. The vehicle sustained extensive damage but no personal injuries were reported, police said.

A 17-year-old Amherst boy is being summoned to court on a charge of breaking and entering to commit a misdemeanor after police found him responsible for holding a party, which several other high-school age people attended, at an East Leverett Road home June 2 at 11:15 p.m., police said. No one allegedly gave permission to the boy and his friends to be in the home, and none of the tenants were present, even though party-goers were on the porch and had their vehicles parked on the lawn, police said.

A 60-year-old Amherst man will be summoned to court on charges of leaving the scene of a property damage accident and failure to stay within marked lanes after the vehicle he was driving on North Pleasant Street sideswiped a van and fled June 2 at 4:30 p.m., police said. 

Joshua M. DeForge, 26, of South Hadley, was arrested June 2 at 12:37 p.m. outside Big Y Supermarket on University Drive on charges of shoplifting by concealment after he left the store without paying for $141.54 in Red Bull energy drink, police said.  

A 22-year-old Ludlow man will be summoned to court on charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle to to endanger, speeding and failure to stay within marked lanes after the vehicle he was driving on West Street hit a pole June 2 at 12:35 a.m., police said.  The man was brought by ambulance to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

Daniel A.J. Campbell, 25, of Springfield, was arrested June 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the CVS Pharmacy on North Pleasant Street on charges of possession of class A and B substances, police said. Police said they found several baggies of heroin in Campbell’s possession at the time of his arrest, as well as a white powder believed to be cocaine after he was taken into custody.

A 35-year-old Miami, Florida man will be summoned to court on a charge of leaving the scene of a property damage accident following a hit-and-run incident at the corner of East Pleasant and Triangle streets May 31 at 1:19 p.m., police said.

Tyrone A. Wallace, 39, who provided an address as the streets of Amherst, was arrested May 30 at 7:21 p.m. on the Town Common on a charge of disorderly conduct, police said.

Stuart A. Larose, 32, of Springfield, was arrested at the same time and place on a warrant, police said.

Lakenia S. Davis, 29, of Mobile, Alabama, was arrested June 3 at 12:01 p.m. at MacKimmie dormitory on a charge of assault and battery, police said.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

12:35 a.m. – Fresh graffiti was found on the College Street railroad overpass. The suspects, who were captured on video surveillance, have not yet been identified. The graffiti included the shape of an airplane and words written in gold.

2:40 p.m. – A pillow was placed next to the front door of a Mill Valley Estates residence. Maintenance workers removed the item.

DISTURBANCES

9:57 p.m. – Police kept the peace between a man and woman yelling at each other at Rolling Green Apartments. Officers determined the man was upset after he got a fishing hook stuck in his hand.

LARCENY

3:13 p.m. – A utility trailer was reported stolen from Colonial Village.

VANDALISM

8:46 p.m. – A window was smashed out on a vehicle parked on East Pleasant Street.

 

TUESDAY, MAY 30

DISTURBANCES

6:23 p.m. – A man yelling racial slurs on a bus on North Pleasant Street exited the bus near North Village and was not located.

NOISE COMPLAINTS

11:37 p.m. – Police issued a verbal warning to Colonial Village residents holding a loud party.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

11 a.m. – The animal welfare officer freed a goat that got stuck in a fence on Sunderland Road.

6:51 p.m. – Two dogs got into a fight on Pine Grove after one got loose from a home.

11:03 p.m. – A large black bear and her cub walking on Main Street were not located by police.

3:05 p.m. – Amherst Police assisted Hadley Police in searching for people passing counterfeit bills at Hadley stores.

4:52 a.m. – Three men causing a scene on Main Street calmed down when police got there.

11:30 p.m. – Police kept the peace between a woman assisting a tenant at Rolling Green Apartments and a security guard who wrote her a ticket for a parking violation.

1:53 p.m. –  A North Amherst resident told police someone attempted to get a credit card in her name

1:27 a.m. – Loud banging on the walls of an Amherst Motel residence ended before police got there.

1:13 p.m. – One driver was issued a citation for failure to use care in backing following a minor two-car accident with no personal injuries on Lincoln Avenue, police said.

 

THURSDAY, JUNE 1

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

4:50 p.m. – A person who pitched a tent on Meadow Street property and was living from it was identified. He agreed to move the tent from the property the following morning.

CITIZEN ASSISTANCE

9:32 a.m. – Police assisted school officials with identifying pills, pulled from a toilet in a school building, after the student attempted to flush them.

6:19 p.m. – Three men playing Frisbee and tossing it near people on the beach at Puffer’s Pond were advised to find a safer place for the activity.

LARCENY

10:11 a.m. – A parking meter was reported stolen from Lessey Street.

2:51 p.m. – Three people caught trying to leave the Big Y Supermarket without paying for $89 worth of groceries were issued trespass notices.

 

FRIDAY, JUNE 2

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

12:06 a.m. – People inside a Farview Way home that was supposed to be vacant were determined to be new residents spending their first night at the residence.

8:55 p.m. – A man inside the CVS Pharmacy on University Drive concealing electric toothbrush heads fled without taking any items. A description of the man was provided to police.

10:37 p.m. – Fireworks were seized from a teenager on Sunset Avenue. The teen was identified after neighbors complained about a loud explosion and observed a vehicle attempting to flee from the scene.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

11 a.m. – A Tanglewood Road resident was advised to keep his dog from running in the street and bothering other dogs in the neighborhood.

11:01 a.m. – An aggressive black hen that attempted to attack a woman at an Amity Street property was removed from the location by the animal welfare officer. The animal was brought to a farm for safe keeping until its owner is identified.

11:14 a.m. – A loose rabbit with floppy ears on North Pleasant Street was brought to the shelter.

11:34 p.m. – A person knocking on the door to a Butternut Farm Apartments home fled after waking up the resident.

4:23 p.m. – Police kept the peace between family members involved in an argument at Olympia Oaks.

LARCENY

3:11 p.m. – A silver and yellow Mongoose mountain bike was reported stolen from a West Street home.

NOISE COMPLAINTS

12:11 a.m. – Police issued a verbal warning to North Pleasant Street residents holding a loud party.

9:42 a.m. – College-age people on the roof of a Northampton Road home yelling at passing vehicles were advised to quiet down. They told police they had just moved into the residence. Police responded to the residents again at 11:02 p.m. for loud music, and the tenants again were reminded about the town’s noise bylaw.

8:27 p.m. – A verbal warning was issued by police to College Street residents playing loud music.

 

SUNDAY, JUNE 4

CITIZEN ASSISTANCE

11:53 a.m. – Police assisted a family concerned that an elderly relative is being taken advantage of by a man he is allowing to stay at his South Amherst home.

DISTURBANCES

4:44 p.m. – Police kept the peace between three men inside a vehicle parked on Blackberry Lane. The driver told police he wouldn’t continue driving until his two passengers apologized to him.

LARCENY

1:48 p.m. – A sign welcoming immigrants displayed on the side of the First Congergational Church on Main Street was reported stolen.

ANIMAL COMPLAINTS

9:25 a.m. – A black bear and her cub walking on Country Corners Road went into the woods before police got there.

7:26 p.m. – Police used an air horn in cruiser to scare off a bear that knocked over a bird feeder on West Street and then ran at and jumped onto a vehicle.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

2:36 a.m. – An Amherst Police K9 unit assisted Hadley Police in locating and apprehending a suspect.

10:24 p.m. – Police assisted firefighters with clearing smoke from a Puffton Village home that came from burnt cookies.
