Garden report: the rhododendron are in full bloom as are the daisies. The eggplant, tomato and pepper plants are in. I wait a while and then mulch and put on the tomato cages. The beans have yet to sprout.

Ramadan greetings to all our Muslim friends and neighbors.

Barbara Schumann of Amherst sent me two cards from India, one of the Amber Fort and the other the Taj Mahal. She raved about the inlaid colored marble designs at the tomb that catch the light and can be pure white, pink or turquoise depending on the time of day. It was hot, she reports.

I saw Maureen Bowler at the Noho Bank and she told me the Amherst Rotary Community Fair is this weekend – Thursday, Friday and Saturday starting at noon on the Town Common. Time to get my annual fried dough.

Tim and Kacey Schmitt and Sandy Davis of Amherst sent a card from St. Goar am Rhein im der Lorelei, Germany. They took the “Normandy to the Eagle’s Nest” tour of WW Two. They visited Munich, the Battle of the Bulge site as well as Normandy beach landings. It was amazing, they wrote.

Congratulations to Kacey, who was named Western Mass Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year.

The League of Women Voters, of which I am a member, will hold its book sale this summer. Books can be dropped off at the Fort River Elementary School beginning June 30. Please don’t donate mildewed books. Some people have a reaction to them. Thanks.

Cynthia Brubaker of Amherst sent me an email about the “Battle of the Botanicals” that will be held June 8 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Powerhouse, Amherst College. It’s a fundraiser for the Hitchcock Center. Call them at 256-6006 for tickets. Food and special drinks created for the event.
