The Christopher Thompson Monument Stone, to honor the black soldiers who fought in the Civil War, will be dedicated May 13 at 2 p.m. in the West Cemetery organized by the Historical Commission. Bob Romer, who is a commission member, sent me the email that notes five members of Thompson’s family fought in the Civil War. Thompson was buried in the cemetery without a gravestone. Bob placed a temporary marker five years ago to honor Thompson. Several relatives of the family are expected to attend. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

Greetings from the Dalmatian coast. I went 3.5 kilometers into a cave; words can’t adequately describe the formations. I walked 1.5 kilometers downhill on a wooden boardwalk past spectacular waterfalls and rushing streams in a national park. The wall walk around Dubrovnik is not for the faint of heart, going up ramps and steep steps. However, the blue Adriatic Sea, red tile roofs, rocky mountainside sloping to the sea and a port full of sail boats is picture postcard perfect.
We took a boat to an island church in Kotor, watched a cute black dog dig up a black truffle, visited medieval and Renaissance castles, walked through many cobblestone squares, passed more souvenir shops with magnets that there not enough refrigerators for.
We learned the history of the countries pre- and post-Yugoslavia.
Note to self: bring reading material when border crossings are on the schedule.
I have pictures that I am willing to share.
I will be back before this is printed.
